by investing in the lives of young people in their pursuit of a higher education.

One evening Barry, Cathy and Whitney were sitting outside on their patio.  Whitney was in her daddy's lap and they were watching the most beautiful sunset.  They started talking about how God is the most talented artist they had ever known and they marveled at the beauty in the sky.  Barry told Whitney that when he got to heaven he was going to ask God if he could help paint the sunsets so when he died, every time she looked at the sunsets, she would know he was in heaven with God.  Three weeks later, Barry was dead.  

While we know that our God certainly doesn't need any help painting His sunsets, it puts a smile on our faces every time we see one.

Deputy Barry Hill Scholarship Fund

Recipients

 

Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.)

This scholarship is given in Barry's name through Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.).  Jamie Van Horn is the daughter of Sergeant Steven Van Horn, Newport Beach (CA) Police Department.  Sergeant Van Horn died of Leukemia as a result of a chemical exposure during a fire in 1987.  Sergeant Van Horn worked the scene coordinating traffic and evacuation of local offices without protective clothing or equipment.  Sergeant Van Horn's end of watch date is November 16, 1997. 

 

Jamie is attending the University of Washington Seattle where she is working toward a degree in pre-medicine/science.

(Must be a High School graduating student of TCLEOSE Certified/Licensed Employee)

The recipient for the 2012 Deputy Barry Hill Scholarship Fund is Miss Paige Ruiz.  Paige is the daughter of Harris County Deputy Sheriff Thomas and Karen Swartz.  Paige will be pursuing a teaching degree at 

Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri.

Preamble of the
Deputy Barry Hill Scholarship Fund
To assist with the higher education expenses of a high school graduating student of a TCLEOSE certified/licensed employee of Harris County as well as the surviving child of a peace officer killed in the line of duty as determined by federal criteria of the United States Department of Justice which will be given through Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc. Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc. is a nationwide not-for-profit organization that offers emotional support to survivors of officers who have been killed in the line of duty.
